Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nesiller Genetik has been conducting awareness activities this year, particularly focusing on the genetic aspect of breast cancer and how we can utilize genetic science to combat breast cancer more effectively.
Dr. Gülay Özgön met with the female employees of Limak, Aster Textile, OEDAŞ Eskişehir, and Hafız Mustafa 1864 companies, drawing attention to the following points:
Breast cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, occurs in 1 in 8 women. Additionally, when breast cancer is detected early, treatment is easier and the chances of success are significantly higher.
Approximately 10-15% of breast cancers are hereditary, known as hereditary breast cancer. Individuals with first-degree relatives (mother, daughter, sister) who develop breast cancer at a young age (under 45) and/or those found to have mutations in breast cancer-related genes through genetic testing are at a much higher risk of breast cancer.
It is recommended that genetic counseling accompany the analysis of genes responsible for breast cancer. Through these investigations, individuals with familial predispositions can be identified, and follow-ups and treatments can be organized based on genetic test results. This approach also helps to prevent unnecessary and excessive treatments.
Knowing your risk for breast cancer, avoiding risk factors, and undergoing regular screenings and early diagnosis can make a difference and save lives.
