SCHOOL OF GENETICS
Genetics is the field of science that examines genetic material’s heredity, variety and relationship to medical conditions. As a sub-speciality field of biology, genetics rapidly progressed in recent years and the knowledge as a result of this improvement creates new areas of use in medicine.
With the completion of the Human Genome Project (which aimed to solve humankind’s genetic code with the support of 18 countries and lasted for 13 years between 1990-2003), genetic practices can be used to diagnose and treat medical conditions in a more effective way.
- “Molecular genetics” which includes genes’ functions and molecular examination of their structure
- “Cytogenetics” which examines the number and structure of chromosomes (physical carriers of our genes)
- “Molecular Cytogenetics” which combines molecular genetics and cytogenetics
Thanks to these 3 methods mentioned above, more effective diagnosis, scanning and treatments have been developed to cure the diseases that threatens human beings life expectancy and quality.
The success of these scientific improvements in practicality strictly depends on the transfer of knowledge about genetics (diagnosis, scanning and consultancy) to other medical disciplines in an accurate and efficient way.
The lack of genetic knowledge makes itself obvious in the practice of medicine which is only interested in someone’s (human) anatomy, diseases and treatments in a larger perspective as distinct from biology.
